Ugandan Songwriters Get Nothing from Their Art – Shenah Skies

The question of having songwriters on the same table with the musicians has been a long way debate but with no outcome. This evening, while appearing on the weekly show After 5 at NBS television, singer Shenah Skies said songwriters reap peanuts.

In her assertion, Sheenah Skies revealed how Ugandan songwriters are broke and how they get nothing from their art. The only thing they end on is the ka small money that the musicians pay them when collecting the written song.

The when the song collects huge sums of money, the songwriters are not remembered yet they should also be getting a percentage from that collection. Hence leaving them dead broke and lagging behind the scenes yet they are the masterminds of the art and the music that is consumed.

It would not be depressing at least of you do not get money from songwriting, at least you get fame from it. You keep gaining from what you do, because you put up something, you put up an art. But like how it currently stands in the country, when you do a song and give it to the musician, it stops there. When the musician goes out there and the song reaps like 200 million shillings, songwriters do not get anything.” Shenah Skies stated.

Uganda has had a long list of songwriters that include; Nince Henry, Daddy Andre, Ray Signature, Yesse Oman Rafiki, Azawi, Frank Lion, Melody Ug, King Saha, Dokta Brain, A Pass and many that are not musicians.

So we ask, why doe the songwriters get small yet they are the ones that create the music? Is it because they are given a one time payment?
