Betty Kamya Biography
Beti Olive Namisango Kamya-Turomwe, also known as Betty Kamya and Beti Kamya was born
on 30th November 1955 (66 years) in Nakuru, Kenya to George Wilson Kamya a Ugandan and Margaret
Wairimu Kamya a Kenya.
Out of the couple’s nine children, Betty Kamya is the fourth born and when she turned six, at
the eve of Uganda’s independence in 1961, her family relocated from neighboring Kenya back
to Uganda.
Education Background
For her elementary school education, Betty Kamya attended McKay Memorial School in
Kampala before transferring to Western Uganda based school St. Hellen’s Primary School which
is known for producing some of the most prominent people in the country including Barbie
Kyagulanyi.
Upon completing primary level education, Betty Kamya joined Wanyange Girl’s School located
in Jinja where she studied her O-level education before joining central Uganda based leading
school King’s College Buddo to complete her secondary level education.
After which, she joined Makerere University from which she attained a Bachelor’s Degree of
Commerce in marketing.
Work Experience
Upon graduating from Makerere University, she worked at Uganda Leather and Tanning
Industries based in Jinja from early 1980s until 1988 when she joined Nyanza Textiles Industries
Limited (Nytil).
She worked with Nytil for four years until 1992 when she then relocated to Kampala with the
love of her life.
In between 1996 and 1999, she employed as Uganda Breweries Limited’s marketing manager
and upon departing the company, she was appointed to the position of Executive Director
Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC).
Political Career
Betty Kamya started out her political journey as a member of the Forum for Democratic Change
(FDC) the ticket with which she represented Lubaga North Constituency in between 2006 and
2010.
However, in 2011, she departed the party forming her own Uganda Federal Alliance under
which she ran for presidency. In the president race, she emerged fifth with a total of 52,782
votes.
After the 2016 general elections, on 6th June 2016, she was appointed to the position of
Minister of Kampala but a 14th December 2019 cabinet reshuffle saw her being transferred to
Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development.
In 2020, Kamya joined the yellow camp as she switched to the National Resistance Movement
party under which she ran for office as Parliamentary representative for Lubaga North
Constituency in the 2021 general elections.
Although she won against Brian Tindyebwa and Dr. Isaac Lwanga in the party primaries hence
standing as the NRM flag bearer in her constituency, in the 2021 general elections, she lost to
National Unity Platform’s Ababaker Kawalya.
On 15th July 2021, Betty Kamya was appointed as the Inspector General of Government (IGG) in
Uganda.

Marriage
Kamya got married to the love of her life Spencer Turwomwe who was a soldier in the Uganda
army. Unfortunately, in 2003, her husband died and since his untimely death, Kamya has not
been known to be romantically involved with anyone.
Children
During her years of being married to Spencer Turwomwe, the couple was blessed with six
children who are now full grown children and have even given Betty Kamya a number of grand
children.

The business woman is estimated to have a net worth ranging in between $1-$5 million and it is
believed that her net worth has significantly grown in between the years of 2020 and 2021 from
her various business ventures and her political responsibilities.
