The new president of the Uganda Law Society (ULS) is promising a shake-up. Isaac Ssemakadde “Legal Rebel” has publicly denounced government interference in the organisation and pledged to fight for greater justice in Uganda.
Isaac Ssemakadde didn’t mince words during his inauguration as President of the Uganda Law Society. He came out swinging against Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka, accusing him of being “drunk on power” and undermining the independence of the ULS.
The new Uganda Law Society president is calling for the Attorney General’s representatives to be removed from the ULS council, arguing that their presence goes against UN standards. This was just a tip of the iceberg on what is coming into the Law Society.
Ssemakadde’s ambitions extend beyond internal reform. He’s set his sights on tackling some of Uganda’s most entrenched problems like land grabbing, election manipulation, and rampant corruption. It’s a bold vision, and only time will tell if he can deliver.
