Two lawmakers are pushing for a new law to combat counterfeit goods on the Ugandan market. They say it’s a big problem that hurts everyone and the economy at large. This new counterfeit bill proposes some serious consequences for making and selling counterfeit products. This includes big fines and even jail time. The goal is to protect both shoppers and businesses. MP Basalirwa, one of the lawmakers behind the bill, explains that this is to protect manufactures, consumers and businesses.
“The objective of this bill is to protect both consumers and manufacturers by ensuring that those involved in the production of counterfeit goods are held accountable. Counterfeiting is a significant problem affecting multiple industries from electronics to pharmaceuticals.” Basalirwa explains.
This includes items like fake medicine which could be really harmful to humans and when companies lose money because of counterfeiters, it hurts the whole economy. This was further explained by the lawmakers.
