The high-profile murder trial of Kampala businesswoman Molly Katanga took a shocking turn this week as defence lawyers raised serious questions about the forensic evidence presented against her. Ms. Katanga is accused of shooting her husband businessman Henry Katanga in 2023, but did a police error lead to the wrong gun being examined?
Defence attorney MacDusman Kabega grilled police expert Andrew Mubiru, who analysed the alleged murder weapon. Kabega presented evidence suggesting the gun Mubiru examined had a different serial number than the one presented in court.
“Do you agree that each gun has specific serial numbers identifying it and distinguishing it from another?”, Kabega pressed, highlighting the potentially damning discrepancy. This sparked confusion and controversy from the defense side of Molly Katanga and gave the case a new unexpected twist. But wait, how is this going to end?
Well, Kabega further accused Mubiru of analyzing a gun from an entirely different case, citing the Court of Appeal case Uganda Vs Kato Kajubi as evidence. He pointed out that key pieces of evidence, like swabs from the gun barrel and trigger, were never provided to Mubiru for analysis.

This raises serious concerns about the thoroughness and accuracy of the forensic investigations. But still, the forensics department has clearly maintained the fact that, it is the real gun that was found at the crime scene and says no alterations were made.
So now it is up to the Molly Katanga defense team to verify the allegations and let the case proceed its way.
