The family of Uganda’s former attorney General, Kiddu Makubuya has confirmed that he has passed away at the age of 75. After a protracted illness, Makubuya, a law professor and former dean of Makerere University’s school of law died today Monday 19th.
His age was 75.
Apparently, Prof. Makubuya was declared deceased by the local media in June this year although his family later stated that he was fighting illness but was still alive.
“We understand that his health is a concern, but we are doing everything possible to ensure his recovery,” the family said at the time without going into the specifics. However, the former minister of general duties, sports, and education passed away in the wee hours of Monday morning.
Born in 1949, Kiddu Makubuya has been a popular name in the country’s ruling circles. Between 2005 and 2011, while multipartism and Dr. Kizza Besigye were at their height in Ugandan politics, the late Makubuya served as attorney general. It was in his capacity as AG that Makubuya attempted to help the Electoral Commission reject Besigye’s candidacy in 2005 by referring to the then FDC president as “less innocent” due to his remand from criminal court.
On May 27, 2011, President Museveni had him take over Janat Mukwaya’s general duties post after he was demoted from the legal advisory to the government job. He also served as the MP for Katikamu County south in Luweero district
Prof. Makubuya had a brilliant academic career as a lecturer and dean at Makerere University’s Law School before entering the muddy waters of politics that would engulf him in corruption allegations during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala.

The family said that they are going to gather at his home in Ntinda and come up with the burial arrangement. However, it’s understood that he will be laid to rest on Friday.
