The new President of the Uganda Law Society, Isaac Ssemakadde, is making waves already a few days after taking over office. He’s publicly challenging judges, saying they need to follow the law and stop thinking they’re too important for criticism.
Have you ever heard the saying, “Nobody is above the law?” Well, the new head honcho of the Uganda Law Society, Isaac Ssemakadde, is putting that saying into action! He’s calling out judges, saying they need to stick to the constitution when making decisions.
He’s also questioning why some judges are giving out super harsh punishments basically, he’s saying they’re being unfair. The outspoken Legal Rebel isn’t afraid to speak his mind at this point. He says that even though judges are important, they shouldn’t act like they’re kings and queens.
He wants them to be open to feedback, even if it’s tough to hear. In his own words, he said that judges are not immortal lords and that being at the realms of courts of law doesn’t mean that they are above criticism and the law at large.
“Judges are not infallible or immortal lords and court decorum doesn’t mean that they are above trenchant or caustic criticism on the digital screens. We must not criticize judges using only the language of the law journal; we can criticize them using any language and they should be able to take it as fair criticism.”
