Uganda is in mourning following the death of veteran journalist and former Amuria MP, Francis Onapito Ekomoloit, at the age of 58. Onapito, a well-respected figure in Ugandan media and politics, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of service and integrity.
Onapito’s death was announced on social media by former Soroti municipality MP, Mike Mukula, sending shockwaves through the nation. Remembered for his humility, determination, and intellectual prowess, Onapito held numerous influential positions throughout his career.
He served as press secretary to President Yoweri Museveni and as a Member of Parliament, earning praise for his commitment to his constituents. Tributes have poured in from across the country, with prominent figures expressing their condolences and remembering Onapito’s significant contributions.
Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, lauded Onapito’s honest and humble contributions to Uganda, highlighting his impactful career as a journalist, press secretary, and former MP. Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, shared a personal reflection, describing Onapito as a personal counsellor who provided invaluable guidance during challenging times.
Onapito’s impact extended far beyond the political sphere. As the board chairperson for Soroti fruit factory, he provided hope and guidance to citrus farmers like Grace Akello from Serere District. His commitment to the factory instilled confidence in the local community and demonstrated his dedication to the betterment of Ugandan livelihoods.
Described as a man of the people, Onapito was deeply respected in the Teso sub-region. Patrick Ojilong, a resident of Katakwi District, lamented the loss of such a prominent figure, stating that the Iteso people have lost a guiding light and a symbol of their identity.
Pastor Santos Labeja of Soroti City echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Onapito’s cool-headed demeanour and legacy of exceptional service during his time as MP for Amuria County.
