In a shocking twist of events, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has accused the Sudanese military of attacking its ambassador’s residence in Khartoum. The incident, which the UAE is calling a “heinous attack,” reportedly caused “extensive damage” to the building. So far, the Sudanese army has remained silent on the issue.
This accusation comes amidst already heightened tensions between the two nations. The Sudanese army has, on multiple occasions, pointed fingers at the UAE, claiming they’ve been supplying weapons and other support to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) a key player in the ongoing 17-month-long war in Sudan.
While the UAE denies these allegations, UN sanctions monitors have indicated there’s credibility to these claims of UAE involvement with the RSF. The attack on the ambassador’s residence adds another layer of complexity to the already dire situation in Sudan.
The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, sparked by a power struggle over a transition to democratic elections, has thrown the nation into chaos. The UN estimates that a staggering 25 million people half of Sudan’s population are in dire need of aid, with famine looming and 8 million displaced from their homes.
