Prof Barnabas Nawangwe gets Another term as MUK Vice Chancellor

The Chancellor of Makerere University Professor Ezra Suruma has appointed Prof Barnabas Nawangwe for another term as the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University.

This was confirmed by the University’s General secretary Yusuf Kiranda in a letter addressed to the University’s stakeholders. Prof Barnabas Nawangwe arose to the University’s top leadership position in August 2017 succeeding Professor John Ddumba Ssentamu.

This new term will end in 2027 when Nawangwe will be ineligible to run for the same office again. Nawangwe’s reappointment came on the back of a recommendation by the University Council.

Following the Provisions of section 31(4) of the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 (as amended), and on the recommendation of the University Council, the Chancellor has reappointed Professor Barnabas Nawangwe for a second five-year term as Vice Chancellor of Makerere University with immediate effect,” part of the circular read.

The same circular went ahead to appreciate the Chancellor for entrusting Nawangwe with another term as the University celebrates its 100 years in existence.

The University community also went ahead to congratulate Nawangwe on landing this new term. They promised nothing but continued collaboration and support ‘as Makerere University enters a new century of service to humanity. Makerere University also congratulated also the Professor on landing another term in office.

“The Chancellor of Makerere University has reappointed Professor Barnabas Nawangwe as Vice Chancellor of Makerere University for a second five-year term. We congratulate Prof Barnabas Nawangwe on his reappointment as Vice Chancellor.”

The Vice Chancellor has overseen a tenure full of mixed effects. Some have been positive while others have been negative. The University has made great technological strides as well as academically. However, the political terrain has continued to taint the University’s image
