Opposition leading party, the National Unity Platform have sadly lost one of the top members.. And this is none other than Simon Akecha Toolit. NUP announced and mourned the death of Toolit through their social media pages. According to the party, Toolit passed away at St Mary’s Lacor hospital in Gulu.
He has been the acting head of research for the National Unity Platform. Toolit is vividly remembered for standing against the current Omoro County MP, Hon Andrew Ojok Oulanyah. This was after the shocking death of the area MP Hon Jacob Oulanyah who was also the speaker of Parliament. Toolit who had defected from FDC to NUP however lost the election.
“We’ve learned with shock and great sorrow of the untimely passing of comrade Hon. Toolit Simon Akecha this afternoon at St. Mary’s Lacor Hospital in Gulu. Hon. Toolit was our flag bearer in the recent by-election in Omoro Constituency. He has also been the acting head of policy and research for the National Unity Platform. We send our deepest condolences to the family of comrade Toolit for such a great loss. May his soul rest in peace,” NUP tweeted.
A number of politicians especially from the opposition and NUP have come out to mourn the death of Toolit. NUP party president Bobi Wine eulogized the former MP saying that it’s said that he has died without seeing the good governance and justice he’s been fighting for during his life. He added that burial arrangements are being discussed with the family and they will be communicated soon.
“With great sorrow, I’ve learnt of the untimely passing of our senior comrade and brother, Hon. Toolit Simon Akecha this afternoon at St. Mary’s Lacor Hospital in Gulu. He carried the @NUP_Ug flag in the recent by-election in Omoro. He’s also been our Acting Head of Policy. It is very unfortunate that he has passed without seeing the justice and good governance which he so much struggled for, all his life. Details regarding burial arrangements are being discussed with the family, and will be communicated in due course. May his soul rest in peace,” said Bobi Wine.
NUP secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya said that “The passing of Hon. Toolit Simon Akecha is both shocking and devastating. When I spoke to him a few days back, he said he was weak but very optimistic he would pull through. The nation has lost an incredibly patriotic leader! May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace.”
