Another day on Lake Victoria, and another heartbreaking reminder of the risks faced by those who rely on its waters. Early Monday morning, tragedy struck near Kananansi landing site in Kalangala District. A fishing boat, carrying eight people and their catch, capsized in rough waters, claiming the lives of five.
This wasn’t just a random accident. The boat, recently repaired after experiencing mechanical issues, was hit by strong winds, causing the engine to fail. Overloaded and taking on water, the situation quickly turned desperate.
Three men managed to survive, thanks to a life jacket, the other two by clinging to the sinking vessel until help arrived. Sadly, their five companions weren’t so lucky. As of Monday morning, their bodies remain unrecovered.
This incident raises serious questions about safety standards on Lake Victoria. Resty Nakawungu, Kalangala District Vice Chairperson, didn’t mince words – more lives could have been saved if everyone had life jackets.
She highlighted the harsh reality faced by many on the lake old engines, lack of affordable safety equipment, and a pressing need for change. This latest incident sadly echoes a worrying trend. In recent years, Lake Victoria has seen a string of similar tragedies, often linked to strong winds and inadequate safety precautions.

One survivor pointedly stated that many can’t afford new engines, let alone life jackets. It’s a stark reminder that for many, braving these waters is a gamble they can’t afford not to take, even at the cost of their own safety.
