Citizens have been urged to remain at home on the 10th of May 2024 by the government. This is after the day being designated as a public holiday to ensure a smooth national population census activity. The announcement was made by Didacus Okoth the senior public relations officer at the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS).
Apparently, this census will be the sixth national census ever since the country started recording them. Okoth called upon all Ugandans to help and assist the UBOS officials where necessary to ensure an accurate exercise.
Although the national census exercise will run until 19th May, Okoth said that people should not mistake the entire period for public holidays. Only the 10th is designated. Additionally, he said that the purpose of having this day is to make sure that Ugandans are found in their homes to ensure accurate details.

“The Uganda Bureau of Statistics on behalf of the Government of Uganda is conducting the sixth National Population and Housing Census 2024. The night of 9th May 2024 is when all questions to be asked during the census will relate and refer to. 10th May 2024 will be a census public holiday and the public is encouraged to stay home to facilitate a smooth start of the enumeration exercise (counting people). “
“We call upon everyone to cooperate and support the field teams by ensuring that our households and communities are accurately counted. Some people think that the 10th which is a census public holiday up to the 19th is public, but that is not true, the public holiday is only on the 10th of May. The purpose of having this day as a public holiday is to enable people to be found in their respective homes so that we can have a smooth start of enumeration,” said Okoth.
