Buganda Kingdom has announced the tragic and untimely death of the kingdom’s queen mother who is traditionally addressed as the “Namasole.”
Basing on the kingdom’s local broadcast station, BBS, the queen mother unfortunately breathed her last today’s morning and no wonder can express the sorrow that has gripped the Kingdom.
“Namasole wa Buganda Margaret Nagawa Siwoza Muyanja aseerede, Namasole ye Maama waa Kabaka. Twakuumye bubi ayi Ssabasajja Kabaka,” read the official statement from the kingdom.
Once the public learnt about the tragic events, they all joined in mourning with their king. They expressed their unmeasurable sympathy and sorrow following the events that occured today’s morning.
Earlier this year, the queen mother had battled an undisclosed illness and was rushed to neighboring Kenya where the Kabaka paid her visit. In a statement released by the kingdom’s Prime Minister, Charles Peter Mayiga, he assured the kingdom’s subjects of the queen mother’s recovery.
“Ssaabasajja Kabaka ku Lwokutaano alambudde ku Namasole mu ddwaaliro. Abasawo Namasole bakyamwekebejja era tulowooza nti ajja kukomezebwawo mu bbanga ttono,” said the Katikiiro Charles Peter.
This can be translated as, the King has paid a visit to his mother in Nairobi where she is hospitalized, although the doctors are still evaluating her health condition. They assure us of recovery and she will soon be returning.
In March 2020, the Namasole launched the Makerere Gender Identity Week. This was conducted under the theme of “I am Generation Equality:. Realizing Women’s Rights” to commemorate the International Women’s day week by the School of Women and Gender studies.
She has truly been an iconic figure not just in Buganda Kingdom but the country at large. Her presence shall be missed and no words can put together the story that grips our hearts at this sad news. May Her Soul Rest in Eternal Peace.
