The United Nations Human Rights office (OHCR) in Kampala has closed its doors after nearly two decades. This unexpected move has caused quite a stir, especially among Ugandan politicians. One Member of Parliament, Honorable Nkunyingi Muwada, isn’t holding back his concerns.
Muwada took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to express his surprise and directly address Uganda’s ambassador to the UN, Adonia Ayebare. In his post, Muwada states, “Amb. @adoniaayebare, You are a known career & senior Diplomat, l hope rumors of inquiries around you are untrue.”
He goes on to question Ayebare’s achievements representing Uganda in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), a group of countries not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. But Muwada doesn’t stop there. He goes on to ask a pretty pointed question about the closure of the Human Rights Office in Uganda.
“At UN has it come to your attention that Uganda refused to renew the host agreement of the UN Human rights office (OHCR) in Kampala & has since closed after 18 years of successful operation in Uganda?” He finishes by asking, “What have you done?” This bold move by Muwada shines a spotlight on the situation and demands answers from those in positions of power.

The closure of the OHCR office is a big deal. It raises questions about Uganda’s commitment to human rights and its relationship with the international community. With Muwada’s public inquiry, it looks like this story is just getting started.
Will Ambassador Ayebare respond to Muwada’s concerns? Only time will tell.
